Bank & Climb
The huge dune systems of maitlands river Mouth dissapear into the background as the plane gains height.

Ref. No.: T-13
Title: Bank and Climb.
Description: DeHavilland Dragon Rapide. de Havilland Dragon Rapide 5H-AAN in a climbing turn over the Indian Ocean near Port Elizabeth, South Africa, late in the afternoon of 16th December 1974. The pilot and owner, John English had recently purchased the aircraft from the Seychelles and together with his wife Mandy, had flown it back to their private airstrip at Progress, near Port Elizabeth. The potentially hazardous long trip across the Indian Ocean and down the east coast of Africa was completed by virtue of 45 gallon drums of fuel replacing the seats, which Mandy had to manage to keep the fuel flowing whilst also keeping the aircrafts centre of gravity within limits. The seats and numerous other spares followed by ship.
Altough built for the RAF in 1945 this aircraft went into storage before moving to East Africa in 1947. It first flew with East African Airways Corporation before operating with the Seychelles-Kilamanjaro Air Transport as 5H-AAN in 1964. Passing through a number of East African owners and countries, including Air Mahe in 1973 as African Queen, flying services between the Seychelles and Praslin Island, the aircraft always retained its 5H-AAN registration number until after it arrived in South Africa where it is registered ZS-JGV. The airframe has recently been overhauled and recovered, currently the Gipsy Qeen engines are awaiting major overhaul before the aircraft is returned to service.
