Two impala cross dangerous territory in the Mabula Game Reserve, Northern Province of South Africa. Impala, small antelope, are browsers which usually frequent bushveld, however, these two males, intent on meeting up with the female herd, make their way across open grassland.

Baviaanskloof Valley Forest

Permalink 07:16:20 pm, Categories: Environment

The Baviaanskloof Mountains in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa boast pristine indigenous Yellowwood forests hidden deep in almost impregnable gorges (Kloofs). These dense areas, habitat to leopard and Lynx, comprise natural springs with rock pools and indienous ferns.

Ferns in Baviaanskloof by Don Bell
These wild undisturbed ferns remain hidden from humans and languish besides natural springs and rock pools.

The rocks covered in algae from being under foliage ly strewn deep in gorges in the Baviaanskloof. They have been swept down from crumbling cliffs upstream by huge floods during past geo-disturbances.

Buffalo Relax in Elephant Park

This site is seldom experienced in the Addo Elephant National Park when a pride of lions roam close by. I experienced this unusual event during May 2008 and wondered whether the Buffalo had perhaps known that the lions had made a recent kill and were'nt that hungry.
